Get the size wrong and a bag is an annoying present. Get the taste wrong and it sits in a cupboard. I’ve profiled twelve leather goods brands, from an £80 UK-made pen case to a £4,100 hand-stitched attaché, and “just get a nice bag” isn’t a starting point. Budget, what the bag has to do day to day, and whether the taste leans heritage, minimal or rugged all change the answer.
A few quick questions, one recommendation, from bags I’ve covered. Where there’s a gap at a given budget (and there is one under £500 if you want something other than Chapman or Ettinger), it says so instead of stretching a pick to fit.
Why These Twelve Brands
Every brand behind a recommendation above has its own profile, built against the same eight criteria I use for every review (the full list is in The Carry List Method). Made-in-Britain workshops like Tusting and Chapman sit alongside Milanese luxury (Valextra) and a direct-to-consumer brand founded in 2012 (Carl Friedrik) because each earns its place on quality and clear trade-offs. None of them paid to be here, and nothing I publish is sponsored.
Still deciding, or buying for someone whose taste you’re less sure of? The full briefcase guide and all my reviews are there to browse properly rather than answer a few questions and trust me. On a smaller budget, the under-£200 guide covers what exists at that price.
